Food waste disposers, explained

Straight answers about how kitchen food waste disposers work, which size suits your household or business, and what should — and shouldn’t — go down the sink.

Disposer basics

What is a food waste disposer?

It is a compact electric appliance fitted under the kitchen sink, where it grinds organic kitchen waste into fine particles. Those particles flow away with the wastewater to the treatment works instead of sitting in a bin and travelling to landfill. In practice it means wet waste is dealt with at the moment it is created.

It is the responsible handling of organic kitchen waste — the peelings, scraps and leftovers a kitchen produces every day. A disposer is one way to do that: it processes only food-derived material, so the waste stream stays organic. Anything that is not food belongs in your normal recycling or refuse.

Roughly a fifth of household rubbish is food waste, and in landfill it is one of the heaviest pressures on the environment. Sending finely ground waste to wastewater treatment instead lowers your household’s carbon footprint and removes the waste quickly and cleanly. It is also a practical alternative for anyone who cannot compost at home.

Choosing a unit

How much power (HP) do I need?

It depends on how many people you cook for. A ½ HP unit comfortably serves a household of around four; for a larger family, choose a machine above 1 HP so kitchen waste is handled without strain. If you are unsure, size up rather than down.

Yes. Restaurants, canteens, hotels and similar sites need a continuous food waste disposer, which is built to run without stopping. That design copes with the steady volume of wet waste a commercial kitchen produces across a full service.

For high-volume operations there is a separate composter range, used in hotels, hospitals, restaurants, canteens, supermarkets, refectories, college and school hostels and similar institutions. It suits sites that want to process organic waste on the premises rather than send it away. Talk to us about your daily waste volume and we will point you to the right capacity.

Installation & daily use

Where does the unit go?

The disposer fits into the kitchen sink outlet and sits in the cupboard below, connected to the waste pipe and to a nearby power supply. Nothing is visible above the sink apart from the drain opening. Fitting is straightforward for a qualified installer and does not usually require changes to your kitchen.

Much quieter than most people expect. The motors are notably hushed, and some models add extra sound insulation for an even quieter run. In a normal kitchen you can hold a conversation while it works.

Run cold water, switch the unit on and feed scraps in steadily rather than all at once. Keep the water running for a few seconds after the grinding sound settles so the pipe clears completely. Used this way, a disposer needs very little attention beyond an occasional rinse.

What goes in & safe use

What can I put in?

Anything that comes from food: bones, eggshells, peelings, nut and fruit scraps, spoiled food and even cut flowers. If it grew or was grown to be eaten, the sink unit can handle it. Feed larger or harder items in gradually rather than in one load.

Tissues, paper, wood and plastic wrapping should never go into the unit — none of them are food, and they do not belong in the wastewater stream. Keep metal, glass and cutlery out as well. When in doubt, ask yourself whether the item was edible; if not, bin or recycle it.

Yes, with normal kitchen sense. The grinding components sit well below the sink opening and are not reachable in ordinary use, and the splash guard stays in place while the unit runs. Never put your hand into the chamber, and switch off the power at the isolator before any cleaning or servicing. Always follow the safety instructions supplied with your model.

Still deciding which unit fits?

Tell us your household size — or, for a business, your daily volume of wet waste — and we will recommend a model and explain what installation involves.
